Multiple viewports on the same cube (Multiple Monitors)

Postby Reason » Tue Sep 25, 2007 10:02 pm

First of all I want to thank you all for putting this much effort in making an interface which is really pleasant to work with. It’s because of beryl I started to use linux so thumbs up for all the developers.. ;)

Back to my request:
After a couple of weeks playing and struggling with compiz-fusion and beryl I was missing a fairly straightforward multi monitor option for the desktop cube.
I think it would be great to have the ability to have one cube with multiple views on different monitors.
To clarify this a little. I want to be able to have for example an 8 side desktop cube and the ability to rotate this cube on each monitor individually. This way I would be able to show all the desktops on all monitors and it would even mean that I would be able to clone the desktop on all monitors by rotating to the same desktop (For presentations with a beamer as another viewport for example).
The cube will be the same as on a single monitor pc and the second or third monitor will just add another viewport to the same cube.
Dragging windows between monitors will move the window to the view which will be active on the specific screen your are dragging too, except when it’s the same desktop or when the end of all viewports is reached. In this case the cube will have to rotate the same way as it does right now.
I think this would really enhance the use of multiple desktops on multi monitors and would make life using compiz-fusion it bit easier, more enjoyable and will add much more value in using more monitors in a multiple desktop environment.

If this is allready possible and I just wasn’t able to figure out how, could someone please clarify it for me? ;)

For those who prefer a visual example:

2 (1024x768) monitors with single 6 sided desktop cube.
(Both screens show the opposite sites of the cube at the same time).

To make my last post a little clearer take a look at this:
(I even added a possible 3rd monitor)

Is there no one who wants this feature too?

I would love an option that would be enabled when the " Multiple Cubes" option is chosen, that would allow you to stop cube rotation on one display.

Or something similar, so that I can use my tv to display movies while at the same time using the primary display as usual without it interrupting my tv display...

This is possible, by using "show on all viewports" (sticky windows maybe) or similar, and a patch (which I don't recommend using - as I wrote it :D)

[offtopic]http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=722 - incase you want to use the patches[/offtopic]

This is just what I want too, unfortunately, it's not possible at the moment (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=8439) I'll be keeping a close eye open for it though, it's something I'd definitely want!

Very nicely described and illustrated by the way :)

Thanks you all for letting me know i'm not the only one interrested in this feature!
Let's hope one of those developers out there sees the light and starts typing like a space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere... ;)

Well I want to see a variant of this.

All I've managed to get is a 'huge desktop' that stretches across my two monitors.

I'd rather see 2 consecutive cube sides map to my two consecutive monitors. I don't need the two monitors to be on opposite sides of the cube.
