By the way, how do you keep KDesktop from drawing a desktop window?

Hi
thank you for your solution,
I have ubuntu 7.10 (Gusty) and I want to have different wallpapers for different workspaces, how ever I am looking not to lose my desktop icons, is it possible?

If yes, can you please explain more?

Thanks.

First of all, if you are using Desktop Cube, there's no need to use the Wallpaper plugin; multiple wallpapers can be set within Cube (see the Appearance tab -> Background Images section). This plugin, therefore, is primarily useful for people who use Desktop Wall.

Both Desktop Cube and Wallpaper require the same adjustment to your system configuration, though: it is necessary to disable Nautilus, KDesktop, or any other app from drawing a desktop window (the window that contains the wallpaper and desktop icons). This means that the desktop icons will no longer be shown. The reason for this is that these plugins draw the wallpapers underneath that desktop window. It is therefore also technically possible to see them if you use a transparent cube, but this is not an option for Wall users.

For GNOME users with Nautilus drawing the desktop, this can be done by running gconf-editor and navigating to the following key:

/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop

Disable this key (set it to false by unchecking the box next to it). You might also need to run killall nautilus to force Nautilus to quit (if it doesn't do so by itself after you change the setting), but this setting should take effect the next time you start up a GNOME session.

Fyda, I don't know if you're checking this thread anymore, but you lost me on the part where we can set 4 wallpapers in the Desktop Cube plugin. My Appearance tab in Cube does not have any options for Wallpaper except for the Cube Caps. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks.

Thanks, adamk, I thought I was losing it. I had that problem where if I launched a root-enabled Nautilus, it would still take over drawing the desktop. I have launched gconf-editor from a root prompt and indeed found that root Nautilus was still showing the desktop, so I disabled that as well. It seems to be working as advertised now. Thanks again.

That's strange; could you describe what happens when you try to start Nautilus?
